Pompeii has origins as ancient as those of Rome, in fact the gens Pompeia descended from one of the first Italic peoples, the Oscans.

Only after the middle of the 7th century BC, a primitive settlement had to be established on the site of the future Pompei.

Famous throughout the world are the “Excavations of Pompeii”, which bring to light the remains of the ancient city, destroyed with Herculaneum and Stabiae by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Equally famous is the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, founded by Blessed Bartolo Longo, a pilgrimage destination from all over the world.

The center extends harmoniously over a high tuff terrace, which overlooks the sea from a height of 50 meters, in the midst of lush vegetation.

The historic center still shows the orthogonal layout of the streets of Roman origin, while towards the mountain it is surrounded by sixteenth-century walls.

There are the Cathedral, rebuilt in the 15th century, with a neo-Gothic façade, and the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi, with a remarkable 14th-century cloister.

In the “Correale museum” collections of Greek and Roman objects and Capodimonte porcelain are exhibited, with a section of 17th-19th century painting; from the park you can also enjoy a magnificent view of the gulf. At Punta del Capo, 3 km to the west, there are Roman remains believed to be from the villa of Pollio Felice (1st century AD).

It is located on a small plateau overlooking Maiori and Minori and enjoys a panoramic view of the Gulf of Salerno that enchanted Richard Wagner.

About half of its tourists are British and American, attracted mainly by its famous villas (such as Villa Cimbrone with its famous view from the Terrace of Infinity, appreciated by the American president J. F. Kennedy).

The town has international tourist fame and together with the nearby Maiori it has been immortalized in various post-war films by Roberto Rossellini.

Its foundation is traced back to the Romans. In the 9th century it became one of the maritime republics rivaling Pisa, Venice and Genoa for control of the Mediterranean.

The Amalfi Maritime Code, better known as the Amalfi Tavole, had a great influence until the 17th century.

The most famous monument of Amalfi is certainly the Cathedral in Arab-Sicilian style and currently dedicated to the patron saint Andrew. The building is made up of superimpositions and juxtapositions of various churches from various eras.

Traditionally, every year a crew of rowers from Amalfi takes part in the Regatta of the Maritime Republics challenging the arms of the three homologous cities.

Thanks to the mild climate and the beauty of the landscape, Positano has been a holiday resort since the time of the Roman Empire, as evidenced by the discovery of a villa and other very recent discoveries, dating back to 2004.

Typical are the many “stairways” that reach down from the top of the town to the beach. The main beaches are: Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo, both within walking distance. The others are: La Porta, Arienzo, San Pietro Laurito.

The Spiaggia Grande is dominated by the Mother Church dedicated to the Madonna S.Maria Assunta.

The town is full of boutiques that produce and sell the “Positano Fashion”, famous throughout the world.
